CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background of the study

Productivity describes various measures of the efficiency of production. Often, a productivity measure is expressed as the ratio of an aggregate output to a single input or an aggregate input used in a production process. Also productivity is considered to be one of the metrics that average construction worker mostly uses to calculate productivity. Productivity is known as a worker’s output per hour within a given range of output and is also compensated depending on the hour the job is done. Once measured in the sense of other workers, the output of an average worker is relative; the output may be adjusted based on individual determination to increase its base of production value on attached compensation. Productivity is often used as a indicator of a system’s success in utilizing inputs. Consequently, productivity is a major concern in an output-driven company, and the successful conversion of capital to marketable products for benefit on investment and calculating productivity is also a priority (Wahab 2010; Wilcox; Stringfellow; Harris and Martin 2000). Tools used in calculating production and efficiency vary from one site to another, however. Many of the standard procedures include: regular schedule allocation of jobs, piece rate and contract process. In all cases, the unit of measurement differs, and thus constitutes a major challenge in measuring productivity based on construction activity.

Considering concrete placing activity, this operation is often measured in cubic meter and placement measures in man-hour per worker, whereas the steel reinforcement is measured in tonnes and linear meter per hour. This could be solved using relative values of productivity rather than absolute values of the output (Goodrum and Hana 2004). Moreover in having a fair representative of the workers productivity, their schedules need to be appraised holistically taking scientific management insight into the output measurement; therefore, a benchmark in the form of target need to be established, having regard for moderate job allocation and extended job beats.
