INTRODUCTION
Image recovery is one of the most important processes in this era of digitization. On the other hand, image detective mechanism has made inroads into various fields such as remote sensing, agriculture, e-commerce, defence, biomedicine, traffic control, crime patrolling, library management and various other media applications. With the advancement in the image acquisition technology and data storage, a large number of images are created and stored continuously. It is a very challenging task to retrieve the relevant image from such a pile of images. The archaic method which employed file name and keyword for image recovery is known as Text Based Image Retrieval (TBIR). It is labour intensive and time consuming too. The human interface also led to errors caused by semantics and misinterpretation. In the early 1990s, a new method of image retrieval i.e. Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) was introduced. It is an automatic retrieval system which can handle large database with reduced errors. This method is more user friendly than TBIR since it searches the required image, based on colour, texture, location and shape (features) of the object. This method of CBIR can be effectively employed in various fields such as medicine, education, space research, transportation, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, crime investigation, road traffic management, surveillance, security, sports and aviation applications.
