Abstract
The Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria view rituals as sometimes real, sometimes virtual journeys. Realized as a parade or procession, pilgrimage, masked presentation or trance of possession, the journey evokes the reflexive, progressive and transformative experience of ritual participation. “Yoruba Ritual” is an original and provocative study of these practices. Using a performance paradigm, Margaret Thompson Drewal develops a new theoretical and methodological approach to the study of ritual, which is deeply rooted in a thorough analysis of participants’ thoughts and actions. Challenging the traditional notions of rigid, stereotyped and invariant ritual, Drewal reveals that the ritual is progressive, transformative, generative, reflexive and filled with simultaneity, multifocality, contingency, indeterminacy and intertextuality. Throughout the book, intentionality is put forward as an informed actor who transforms the ritual itself through play and improvisation. Interpolations on performance and their significance by Kolawole Ositola, scholar of the Yoruba oral tradition, ritual practitioner, diviner and master performer, are an integral part of the narrative. Rich descriptions of rituals relating to birth, death, reincarnation, divination, and genre constructions are made even more alive by a generous selection of real-life terrain photos.
