KNOWLEDGE ON THE CAUSES AND SOLUTION TO EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER ONE

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is an essential instrument in the development of Nigeria, but the issue of malpractice has led to the problem of this system. The main objective of the examination is to certify the results obtained, to select educational and employment opportunities, to monitor the quality of the curriculum and its execution, to monitor training standards and to assess the quality of the program efficiency of institutions.           However, the appearance of poor examination practices at any level of the education system is the greatest threat to the certificate so issued. According to Olusoji (2012), examination-related neglect is not a recent or tertiary phenomenon. He has been with us in Nigeria for a long time and has now almost taken an epidemic influence. The phenomenon is increasing in number, size and complexity. The first reported publicity of a case of malpractice examination in Nigeria occurred in 1914, as a result of a leak of question papers during the top local examination in Cambridge. Since then, several cases have been reported, but recently there have been reports in 2009. If we also look at cases of exam fraud that occurred over the years in our school system as well as examinations conducted by organizations such as JAMB, NABTEB, NAEC, WAEC, NECO, NTI and other professional organizations, one could conclude that exam errors are a common everyday experience.

Examination malpractices include misrepresentation of identity or impersonation, cheating, theft of other students’ work, tampering with the works of others; bringing prepared answers to examination halls, unethical use of academic resources, fabrication of results, and showing disregard to academic regulations (Gross, 2013; Owuamanam, 2015).  These vices have been regarded as academic misbehaviour capable of truncating an educational system (Glasner, 2102; Ogunwuyi, 2015).  They have also been regarded by researchers (Omotosho, 2012; Hurwitz and Hurwitz, 2014) as dishonesty in examinations perpetrated by a person or a group of persons.

1.2       Statement of Problem

The persistent occurrence of examination malpractices has been a major concern to educationist.  Despite the high premium placed on examinations by the National Policy on Education (FGN, 2004), it seems that examination malpractices have not been properly addressed in Egor Local Government.  Common observations have shown that there is mass cheating in public examinations in the local government.  Nothing concrete has been done to reduce the problem except the cancellation of results for a particular centre or the withholding of results in certain subjects.   The problem of the study was that finding a lasting solution to the issue of examination malpractices among secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.
