ABORTION AND THE HEALTH OF FEMALES (15-49 YEARS) IN BIG QUA COMMUNITY, CALABAR MUNICIPAL AREA OF CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study examined abortion and the Health of females (15-49 years) in Big Qua Community, Calabar Municipal Area of Cross River State. The study was determined by threatened abortion, criminal abortion and septic abortion. The study was necessary because in spite of effort bythe Government and other non-governmental organization in providing free healthcare services for females of (15-49 years) especially pregnant ones through the establishment of Primary Health Care Centers in all Communities and the recruitment of health staffs to Mann these centers, it was observed that all types of abortion are still on the increase leading to complications like infertility and death among females (15-49 years).Three objectives were formulated to guide the study. Three research questions were also raised. Relevant literature to the three sub variables in the study was reviewed. Research design used for the study was descriptive survey while the Area of study was Big Qua Community, Calabar Municipal Area of Cross River State. Populations of study were females of (15-49years) in Big Qua Community. Simple random samplingtechnique was used to select the sample size which was 120 females of (15-49 years). Instrument for data collection was questionnaire. 120 copies of questionnaire were printed and administered to the 120 females of (15-49 years) who were the sample size for the study. The questionnaire was validated by the project supervisor and two other lecturers in the Department. Reliability of the instrument used was ascertained using TEST-RETEST Reliability method. Data obtained from 120 copies of questionnaire administered to the 120respondents was presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentage. Findings arrived at were as follows: threatened abortion affects the health of females (15-49 years), criminal abortion causes uterine perforation, barrenness, uterine scare formation and excessive bleeding and septic abortion occurs as a result of unsafe abortion and carries the risk of spreading infection to other part of the body.The study was concluded, appropriate recommendations made as well as suggestions for further studies.
