Social Media And Students’ Mass Mobilization In The 2013 University ASUU Strike In Nigeria (A Study Of University Of Lagos)

ABSTRACT
The study is concerned with the social media and students’ mass mobilization in the 2013 University ASUU strike in Nigeria (A case study of University of Lagos). There is no doubt in the fact that the world is moving into a global village as postulated by Professor Marshall McLuhan. According to him the world is compressed into a single electronic room where information from far and near can be exchanged with a click of the mouse and now with a touch of screen. The study design is quantitative with the use of cross sectional survey method and questionnaire was used to elicit responses from the respondents within University of Lagos Campus, Akoka. Probability sampling technique through multi stage sampling was used to select 5 faculties out of the 12 faculties in UNILAG using simple random selection and in each faculty 1 department was drawn and in each department, 200 level and 400 level students were selected after which respondents were drawn using systematic sampling. Most of the respondents use social media during the strike especially facebook, Whatsapp, and BBM, majority of the respondents login to one social media or the other daily. It is noted that the majority of the respondents learn and share their views about the strike via socio-media.
