TEACHING STRATEGIES AND STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN BASIC SCIENCE IN OSHODI-ISOLO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to investigate the Teaching Strategies on Student’s Performance in Basic Science. Five hundred (500) JSS3 Students were randomly selected from Ten (10) Local Government Areas that constitute Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area, Lagos State and used for the study. A research’s made achievement test in Basic Science titled “Basic Science Achievement Test” (BSAT) was used to collect data for testing the four null hypothesis stated for the study. Analysis of data was done by calculating the independent t-test and the hypothesis were tested at 0.5 level of significance. Findings made that there was a significant difference between the performance of Students taught basic science using Guided-Discovery and Lecture Method; Individualized Method and Group method; Project Method and Discussion Method as well as the use of power point presentation and Graphic Materials. Based on these findings, recommendations were made among others that: more classrooms should be provided in Schools; teachers should embark on in training service to enhance their use of more modern teaching strategies and more computer sets should be made available in schools.
